Paramotor Engine Thrust Explained: How Much Do You Need?

Get this number wrong and every launch is a fight. Here's how to match thrust to your weight — with a formula you can actually use.

The number one gear mistake we see new pilots make isn't the wrong wing — it's a motor that's too small for them. Let's make sure that's not you.

What "thrust" actually means

Thrust is the amount of forward push a paramotor produces when the throttle's open, measured as static thrust in kilograms or pounds. It's the force that gets you running fast enough to launch, then climbing once you're airborne. Every engine and propeller combination has a thrust figure, and matching it to your weight is the whole game.

Why underpowered is the trap

An underpowered motor doesn't announce itself in the shop — it feels fine on your back. It shows up on the field: sluggish acceleration on launch so you're sprinting to get airborne, weak climb-out that eats up runway and clearance, and genuinely marginal performance on hot days or at higher elevation when the air is thin. For a heavier pilot on a small motor, a routine launch becomes a struggle. Get enough thrust and the same launch is easy and safe.

Aim for thrust ≥ your all-up weight

All-up weight = your body + full gear + fuel. Larger pilots and those flying in heat or altitude should add margin on top.

Treat these as starting points. If you're at the top of a bracket, or you fly somewhere hot or high, size up. Thin air and heavy loads both eat into effective thrust exactly when you need it most.

The trade-offs of more thrust

If more thrust is safer, why not just buy the biggest motor? Because power isn't free:

The goal isn't maximum thrust — it's enough thrust with sensible margin, in a package you can comfortably carry and launch. A light pilot on a huge motor is as poorly matched as a heavy pilot on a tiny one.

Density altitude matters more than pilots expect

On a hot afternoon at elevation, the air is less dense — your prop bites less air and your effective thrust drops, sometimes noticeably. If you fly in the mountains or in summer heat, build in extra margin. The motor that's perfect on a cool coastal morning can feel weak at noon in the high desert.

Weigh yourself with full gear, be honest about where and when you fly, and choose thrust with margin — especially if you're a larger pilot or fly in demanding conditions.
