1. The wing: forgiving beats fast, every time
Your wing is the most important safety decision you'll make as a new pilot. It's tempting to look at fast, sleek reflex wings that experienced pilots fly, but a beginner on an advanced wing is a genuinely dangerous combination. The wing that keeps you alive while you're learning is the one that's slow to react, easy to inflate, and quick to recover if you make a mistake — because you will make mistakes.
Understand EN certification
Paraglider and paramotor wings carry an EN safety rating that tells you how demanding the wing is to fly:
- EN-A — maximum passive safety, most forgiving. This is where every beginner should start. An EN-A wing tends to recover from small collapses on its own and won't punish a clumsy input.
- EN-B — a step up, for pilots with real hours who want more performance. Not a first wing.
- EN-C / EN-D and reflex wings — high performance, high demand. These belong to experienced pilots only. Full stop.

Here's the factor that ties it all together and gets ignored in spec sheets: you have to carry this thing on your back and run with it. A complete paramotor — engine, cage, harness, fuel — commonly weighs 50 to 75 pounds. On launch, you're running with all of it until the wing takes the load.
If you're not a strong runner, a lighter setup and good technique matter more than raw power. This is a real trade-off: lighter often means less thrust, more thrust often means more weight. A good instructor watches you handle the wing and helps you find the balance point. A catalog can't.
What a complete beginner setup actually costs
Let's be honest about money, because vague answers help nobody. A complete new beginner package generally lands in this range:
- Wing (EN-A): $3,000–$4,000
- Motor + harness: $5,000–$7,000
- Reserve parachute: $800–$1,200
- Helmet, gloves, basics: $400–$800
